By altering the speaker level to 10db higher than they are supposed to be set, all you’ve done is increase the volume relative to reference by 10db. THe receiver is now incorrectly calibrated. You could have achieved exactly the same result by simply increasing the master volume by 10db.

Can you use straight mode on a Yamaha AVR?
With the Yamaha AVR’s you do have the option to apply processing to 5.1 soundtracks, so you can alter the sound to add effects. So, if you want to hear the original 5.1 soundtrack use straight mode. Discrete 5.1 would result in you getting 5.1 audio if using the STRAIGHT mode.
