Why does my Receiver say decoder off when not playing?
Decoder Off is displayed when the receiver is not actually receiving an audio bitstream from your playback device. When you are not playing anything, the screen should say decoder off. This is normal and not a fault.
How do you turn on a decoder on a receiver?
In either case the receiver would not need to turn on a decoder to play sound. You can toggle this informational display by pressing the INFO button on the front panel of the receiver or on the remote control (depending on your model receiver) – you will have three choices: DSP Program, Audio Decoder, and Input.
When does the decoder off message come back on?
It is made most noticeable by the sub. At the same time as the noise from the speakers I see a “Decoder Off” message on the amp momentarily. After the message sound from the playing device comes back on and the message goes away. The whole thing takes under a second.
How to turn off the decoder on a Yamaha?
Thanks for the reply. Please shut down the cable box and Yamaha. Unplug them both from AC power for 5 minutes. During this time disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable from both devices. Then plug in the cable box and the receiver. Turn on and let it reboot. Then power on the Yamaha.

Why does my Yamaha decoder keep going off?
Well I have seen this a few times on the site, and it was due to the HDMI Inputs being faulty and the Yamaha not receiving a signal, thus giving the “Decoder OFF” message. In that case, the unit needs to be sent out to Yamaha for them to replace the HDMI Inputs, and check the 5 volt Bus Power coming into the processor.
