Can you hook up a PC to an Onkyo receiver?

I have just tried to hook up my PC to my Onkyo receiver with an HDMI cable, and the audio comes out fine, but it will only display the PC desktop (home) screen, not what I am playing. I have tried the HDMI cable through other inputs on the TV and it works fine.
